Back in the US

Hi NZ team (and Bryan & Carole, Texan Team)

I arrived back in Colorado 2 days ago to a bit of snow and a big smiling, hugging Clarkie.  What a day that was.

Aaron still has a very long way to go in his recovery and is still showing blatant signs of severe brain trauma but he is a whole new person compared to the guy I left in ICU 3 weeks ago.  He is remembering a lot more of his NZ life and some of the friends from way back who have sent messages and he is so blown away by this.  He asks caring and inquisitive questions about Dad, Mum, Ray and Andrew and has talked in depth about how frustrating his lack of short term memory is.

He also talks about some of his dear friends here in the US (who have become dear to the Clarks now also) and knows his cats’ names.  He also talks about “his saviour”, Tedi.  It’s so great to see that and brings tears to my eyes as it’s been so hard on Tedi so to see the adoration in his eyes when she is there is so awesome.

The rehab team are pushing him pretty hard at the gym.  He is very, very thin and frail but he’s pretty pleased with how much stronger he is getting, slowly but surely.  He’s really frustrated though by his right arm – as he calls it “the dead arm”.  He can’t hold it up at all which is a concern.

His Orthopaedic Surgeon, Justine Crowley, called in today after doing his 4 week x-ray check on his pelvis.  She said he is growing new bone which is good but he won’t be weight bearing on it for 3 months, so it will be a long and frustrating recovery process.

Also his cough seems to be much better.  I haven’t heard any medical details on the full status of the MRSA but hope to get some better info on it in the next few days.

A few thank you’s from all of us:

  • Bryan and Carole, our dear Dallas friends – thank you for your overwhelming generosity from me, Mum & Dad.  I hope you can meet our ’scrapper’ sometime.  Andrew and I can’t wait to see you, maybe this weekend, and to meet the little man!
  • Alan and Jackie – what wonderful, giving Godparents you have been.  You have blown us away.
  • All the other people who have donated so generously – there are some of you who we don’t know or haven’t left a name.  Thank you so very much.
  • Aaron’s old school mates and motorcross buddies!  He has asked me to read out some messages to him over the next week so keep them coming.
  • My incredible team at Copper…I couldn’t do this for Aaron and my family without the faith I have in you guys to keep the home fires burning and to bring home a massively busy summer ahead.  Bring on the Christmas party – you guys deserve a large drink or 10.  The bosses credit card will be well open!

Andrew – I can’t believe you will be here in 3 days.  I can’t wait, and Aaron can’t wait to see you too.  Yes, I’ve told him it’s his shout.

Love and hugs to everyone at home

Megan
